As the oldest and arguably the most picturesque and untouched of all the Hawaiian islands, Kauai has earned the moniker "The Garden Island" due to its lush, vibrant landscapes and diverse ecosystems. From its beautiful beaches to its rugged coastlines and misty mountains, every inch of the island is a testament to nature’s artistry.
Its unspoiled beauty sets the stage for an authentic Hawaiian experience that leaves visitors in awe of nature's natural wonders.
Kauai manages to keep its peaceful, laid-back atmosphere with a population of around 70,000, which is a stark contrast to other busier islands of Hawaii.
And let’s not forget the island’s history and rich culture, delicious food, beautiful beaches, and the warm Aloha spirit of its people.

Kauai is Hawaii’s oldest Island at approximately 5.1 million years of age.
60-plus movies have been filmed in Kauai. The Movies, Outbreak, and Jurassic Park to name a few, and the popular TV shows, Baywatch and Gilligan’s Island were also filmed in Kauai.
Kauai has a building code that states no structure can be taller than a coconut palm tree.
There is no Daylight Savings Time.
Kauai is the wettest place on Earth.
Kauai has more beaches than any other Hawaiian Island.

When is the Best Time to Visit Kauai?
Before you book those plane tickets, you might be asking if there is a best time to visit Kauai.
The answer is… Yes!
Although Kauai boasts a mild tropical climate year-round, keep in mind that Kauai holds a record not only in average yearly precipitation but also in hourly precipitation. Mt. Waialeale gets an average of 450 inches of rain a year.
Seasons of Kauai
The Wet Season- Is from November to April, with December getting the most rain. The wet season brings occasional heavy rains, which contribute to the island's lush landscapes but can also impact certain outdoor plans.
The Dry Season- So to speak, spans from May to October and would be optimal If you are looking for the best chance of plenty of sunshine and calmer seas. The month with the fewest rainy days is June.
The Busy and Pricy Season- tends to be during the peak summer months, mid-June to August, and major holidays. With increased crowds comes increased prices.
The Garden Island can be the trickiest island to pick a time to visit because of all the rain and strong currents in the winter months and the increased crowds and prices in the summer months. So when is the ideal time to visit the garden island?
The best months to visit Kauai, In my opinion, are May, August, September, and October. The hotel and excursion rates are generally lower, there are clearer skies and calmer seas, ideal for exploring both land and sea, and there are fewer people during these months.
Limited to Visiting during Winter?
If you’re like most people, weather is one of the most significant factors in deciding when to visit any location, especially Kauai, the wettest spot on earth.
As previously stated above, the Winter months, November through April, have significantly higher rainfall. However, if the only time you can visit Kauai is during the Winter months, don’t fret. You can still have a great beach day.
I recommend choosing the Poipu area on the South Shore for sunnier skies and calmer water, as the North Shore experiences heavier rainfall than the South. The North Shore averages 40-60 inches of rain per year, whereas the South Shore averages 30-40 inches.
You’ll also be pleased to know that the temperatures during the winter months average in the upper 70s, which is likely warmer than where you are coming from.
There will be rain, but there also could be glorious sunshine. Either way, come prepared for all types of weather conditions.
Is Kauai Expensive to Visit?
Visiting Kauai is always expensive, but costs soar when the crowds do, especially in the Summer months. The average price of a one-week trip to Kauai is about $2,600 for a solo traveler, $4,700 for a couple, and $8,800 for a family of 4. These prices are for a comfortable mid-level trip.
Lodging- will likely be your most significant expense on your vacation. Kauai hotels average around $230 per night, while most vacation rentals will cost $240-$480 per night.
Meals- in Kauai can vary, with prices ranging from $25-$55 per meal. You can expect an average cost of $60 per day, per person for meals.
Ultimately how expensive Kauai is depends on you. Saving money on your Kauai vacation can be accomplished by choosing to visit during the off-season, September to November, and April to June. Generally, you can find lower hotel room rates and cheaper excursions during these months. You can also opt to cook for yourself and take advantage of all the free things the island has to offer.

Where to Fly into Kauai?
We got Lei’d when we arrived at the Lihue Airport
There is only one airport on the Island of Kauai, Lihue Airport (LIH). LIH is the key point of entry for both overseas and inter-island flights. Many airlines now offer direct service to Kauai. Other options would be to fly into Honolulu International Airport (HNL) connect on Oahu, and then travel to Kauai.
Lihue Airport, interestingly, does its entire check-in outside. It’s a small breezy open-air airport that is perfect for the warm tropical weather.
It serves about 2.6 million passengers a year. Booking your flight well in advance and being flexible with your travel dates can help you secure the best deals.
Do You Need a Rental Car?
100% Yes!
I highly recommend a rental car to fully explore Kauai's diverse attractions easily. Although both Lyft and Uber are authorized for drop-off and pick-up at the airport on Kauai, public transportation is limited, and having a car allows you to access remote areas and set your own pace.
You will definitely want to book a vehicle rental ahead of time, especially during high season.
How Many Days to Spend on Kauai?
Deciding how long to stay on Kauai can be a challenge. Kauai may be one of the smaller Hawaiian islands but there is so much to see and do that you can stay busy for well over a week.
I suggest at a minimum you plan to spend at least one week on Kauai. This gives you a good amount of time to fit in the highlights, go for an epic hike or two, and still have plenty of downtime to actually have a vacation.
If you can’t spend a week on Kauai, it’s definitely doable, but it will be very important that you prioritize your time wisely. Kauai is the most compact of the all Hawaiian Islands so if you’re pressed for time or more of a go-go type, either way, you can still accomplish a lot on Kauai in 3-4 days.

Where Should You Stay?
Kauai has several very distinct regions to choose from, each with its own unique charm.
Kauai’s Regions:
1. The North Shore, including Princeville, Hanalei, and Kilauea, is known for its lush landscapes and upscale resorts. It may be one of the most scenic places on Earth. The mountains rising as a backdrop to lush landscapes along the coastline make this stretch of the island seem like the "real" Hawaii you've envisioned visiting. Take note that this side of the island experiences higher rainfalls than in other locations. It also has the more expensive accommodations.
2. The South Shore, including Koloa, Lawai, and Poipu, has stunning beaches and a wide range of accommodation options. You will find the best weather, as you can experience more sunny and dry days in this part of the island. This region is known for its stunning beaches, but beware, they are peppered with crowds, so expect little privacy.
3. The East Side (aka Coconut Coast), including Kapaa, Wailua, and Lihue, offers a mix of vacation rentals and historical sites. This part of Kauai is the most developed part, but it's also where you'll find the most budget-friendly accommodations. The beaches are not as majestic as the North Shore or as convenient as the South Shore.
4. The West Side, including the towns of Waimea and Hanapepe, offers a quieter and more local experience. Staying on the West Side is much less popular than the other locations. Don't recommend staying on this west side unless you need close access to the Waimea Canyon for your trekking purposes.
Should I Stay in More Than One Place on Kauai?
Since there is only one road that drives you around the whole island and traffic can sometimes be an issue, a lot of people wonder if they should split their stay in two different locations to save time driving.
My answer is, No.
Kauai isn’t a big island, and although it can take about 2 hours to drive the entire island, not including pit stops, I don’t feel saving 30-45 minutes of driving is worth the hassle of switching places to stay.
If you are looking to explore as much of the island as you can, I encourage you to set your home base on the East Side, the Royal Coconut Coast. You can easily explore the entire island from there since it’s conveniently centrally located between the South and North Shores. Which cuts down on the driving time between all your incredible activities.
What should I include in my Kauai itinerary?
Na Pali Coast
“Napali” means cliffs.
There is no shortage of things to do on Kauai.
Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, an adventure seeker, or a beach bum, you won’t lack ways to enjoy the Garden Isle. The challenge will be to decide which popular attractions and activities to fit into your itinerary.
To kickstart your planning, here are some must-see highlights you definitely shouldn’t miss.
Na Pali Coast: The iconic Na Pali Coast is a must-see for any visitor to Kauai. “Napali” means cliffs. With its majestic cliffs that jet 3,500 feet above the cerulean Pacific waters, you will understand why it’s called the Na Pali Coast. This stunning coastline is inaccessible by car and the only way to see is by foot, by air, or by boat.
Helicopter Flight Over the Island: If you can budget for it, I highly recommend you take it to the air. To fully appreciate the grandeur of Kauai’s dramatic cliffs, lush rainforest, towering waterfall, and sparkling coastline, you must see it from a helicopter. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Boat and Snorkeling Tour of Na Pali Coast: To truly grasp the magnitude of this marvel, one must embark on a boat and snorkel tour, a voyage that offers an up-close encounter with the coast's towering cliffs, hidden sea caves, and vibrant underwater ecosystems.
Hike a Ridge Top for Epic Sunset Views: Hiking a ridge top in Kauai as the sun sets towards the horizon, is an experience that defies description.
Waimea Canyon: Often dubbed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” this awe-inspiring destination is perfect for hiking of all levels and taking in panoramic views. The vibrant reds and oranges of the canyon walls boast a strong contrast against the lush greenery of the surrounding landscape.
Beach Day at Poipu Beach: You can snorkel, swim, surf, or simply bask in the sun at this family-friendly beach renowned for its sea turtle sightings. You may even see a monk seal or two.
Hanalei Bay: Hanalei is the gateway to the North Shore. Relax on the white sands, jump off the historical pier, try your hand at surfing, or explore the charming town nearby. Lush mountains and waterfalls will be your backdrop to whatever adventure you choose.

What should you Pack for Kauai?
It can be a challenge deciding what to pack for a trip to Kauai. Your trip may include a mix of adventures, both on land and in the water, fluctuating weather, and relaxation. Packing the right items can make or break your trip. Choose a careful balance of essentials for your outdoor adventures and comfort.
Here are my must-have items to help you get packing:
First and most importantly, pack a sense of humor and a no-worries attitude. The Hawaiian island operates on “island time.”
Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, reef-friendly sunscreen and I highly recommend a long-sleeved rash guard. There is nothing more miserable than a sunburn on vacation!
Rain Jacket: You will experience rain at some point on your vacation.
Lightweight, breathable clothing: It’s quite humid so pack articles that dry quickly.
Swimsuit: Preferably more than one since you will likely be wearing one every day as your main source of clothing.
Sturdy shoes: preferably a double-duty shoe that can double for hiking and water activities.
Waterproof camera: I highly recommend a GoPro so you can capture the colorful underwater show of vibrant fish and sea turtles. Plus it’s lightweight and small to pack.
Snorkel Gear: I prefer to bring my own not only for sanitary reasons but an ill-fitting mask can definitely ruin your snorkeling experience.

What else should you know?
It’s essential to be mindful of safety and environmental conservation during your Kauai visit, so Kauai can remain the paradise that it is! Respect Nature! Please stay on designated trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, and don’t pick plants or touch coral reefs while snorkeling.
The ocean conditions can be dangerous! Pay attention to advisories and be cautious swimming or snorkeling in areas with strong currents.
